Fifth Regional Landlords’ Conference Provides Advice on New Government Policy

Around 200 people working in the region’s private rented sector came together on Friday 12th March to share best practice and experience at the fifth North East Regional Landlords’ Conference.

Held at St James’ Park, the event was organised by Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside Councils in partnership with the National Landlords’ Association and Bridging NewcastleGateshead (BNG).

The conference included an update on the latest Government policy impacting upon the private rented sector, and Northumbria Police were also on hand to give an insight into what could be happening in tenanted properties.

There was also a session on tenancy management, and delegates were able to participate in workshops on tax, local housing allowance, and health and safety.

Claire McMullen, Manager of Newcastle’s Private Rented Service, said: “The landlords’ conference is a key event for those working in the private rented sector as it enables them to find out more about Government legislation, and what it means to them. They are also able to meet others working in the sector, and learn more about issues which affect them and their work. Once again, we are extremely grateful to our partners who have taken part, lending their expertise to the event.”

Northumbria Police Detective Inspector David Nicholson who was at the event to give advice to landlords said: “The cultivation of cannabis causes harm to properties, and our neighbourhoods, and is linked to organised crime.

“The criminals involved have a total disregard for the safety of others who may work or live nearby.

“Properties are ‘gutted’ internally to maximize the space available to house the plants and associated equipment, and many have been damaged structurally, by damp, fires and infestation of mites.

“It is estimated that each property used for cultivation costs an average of £20,000.00 to restore to a habitable condition.

“Northumbria Police will not tolerate organised crime in this area and we are working with communities and partner agencies to stamp out cannabis farming in Northumbria.”

Anyone with any information about criminal activity can contact their neighbourhood teams on 03456 043 043 ext 69191 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
