Rent Deposit Scheme

The Rent Deposit Scheme has been a huge sucess and has created and sustained many tenancies since its introduction.  To make sure that the RDS continues to provide excellent service to our clients we have streamline the process.

How can the Newcastle Rent Deposit Scheme help?

The Rent Deposit Scheme will help with a no-cash deposit guarantee for a suitable private rented property in Newcastle upon Tyne if you qualify for the Scheme.

How does the deposit guarantee work?

The deposit guarantee is a written agreement that is put in place instead of a cash deposit. The deposit guarantee provided by the Rent Deposit Scheme lasts for a maximum of 12 months. In this time you will need to save up for a cash deposit of your own to give to the landlord when the deposit guarantee expires. We do not pay any cash to you or the landlord.

How can I get help with a deposit?

When you have found a private rented property that you think is suitable you will need to contact us and let us know the following information:

Property address
Landlord’s name and contact phone number
Rent
Deposit required
Amount of admin fee (if required)
Property type and size

We can then check that:

The property is in Newcastle upon Tyne
The property is affordable
The property meets your needs
The landlord will accept a deposit guarantee
You are eligible for the Scheme

We will need you to complete an application form which asks for information on your housing history and personal circumstances and who is in your household.

Who qualifies for the Newcastle Rent Deposit Scheme?

To qualify for the Scheme you must meet the following criteria:

Be aged 16 and over
Have a connection to Newcastle (live, work or have close family in Newcastle)
Want to live in private rented accommodation
Want to live in Newcastle upon Tyne (not Gateshead or North Tyneside)
Be able to manage a tenancy with no support
